A threshold story about grief, identity, and the unseen initiations that reshape who we are.
What if your grief, your body, and your moments of disorientation were not things to fix, but thresholds to meet?
In this episode of Conversations at the Threshold, I am in conversation with Arianne MacBean, and together we explore what it means to be met by life in its most transformative moments, moments that arrive uninvited, reshape us from the inside out, and cannot be forced into meaning before their time.
Together, we explore grief, mystical experience, and the quiet, often disorienting process of becoming someone new through loss, embodiment, and inner transformation.
If you have ever felt undone by loss, confused by your own internal shifts, or unsure how to orient yourself after something fundamental changed, this conversation is for you.
In this conversation, we explore:
• The “tectonic” threshold of grief following the death of her mother and how loss became an initiation into the unseen
• A powerful somatic and mystical experience in a cave in Crete and the embodied encounter with the “hum” of the Earth
• The difference between forcing ritual and allowing transformation to unfold in its own timing
• How micro-shifts and internal reframes can reshape identity, relationships, and lived experience
• The practice of self-trust, embodied intuition, and learning to listen to inner knowing
Episode Summary
This conversation with Arianne MacBean explores what it means to be initiated by life through thresholds of grief, mystery, and transformation, and how these experiences reshape identity, perception, and embodied reality.
Arianne shares the profound threshold moment of losing her mother and how this loss became a portal into the unseen dimensions of life. As she moved through her mother’s dying process and death, she found herself longing for something symbolic to mark the transition, an external ritual that could help her understand what was happening internally. Yet what she discovered was that thresholds do not always respond to our attempts to structure or contain them.
One of the most striking moments in her story is an experience in a cave in Crete, where she encountered what she describes as a deep internal “hum,” a vibrational presence that moved through her body and consciousness. In this moment, she was faced with a choice, to resist what she was sensing or to surrender into it. This became a lived experience of threshold crossing, not as concept, but as direct embodiment.
Throughout the conversation, Arianne reflects on the difference between forcing meaning and allowing meaning to emerge. She names the tension between wanting clarity and the deeper invitation of uncertainty, where transformation actually takes place.
We also explore the subtle but powerful nature of micro-shifts, the ways small internal reframes can reshape relationships, identity, and lived experience over time. Alongside this is a deep exploration of self-trust, embodied intuition, and the ongoing practice of listening inwardly, especially when certainty is not available.
At its core, this episode is a reflection on what it means to be changed by life in ways that cannot be controlled, predicted, or forced, and how we learn to meet ourselves again and again in the unknown.
Reflection
Where in your life are you being asked to soften your need to force clarity, and instead trust that something deeper is already unfolding within you?
